A murder by jealousy, the suicide of a fallen nun, the miracle of the Virgin Mary’s appearance, legacy hunting: Giacomo Puccini’s Il trittico, a triptych of the three one-act operas Il Tabarro, Suor Angelica and Gianni Schicchi, is full of dramatic and thrilling moments.

Created during the years of World War I, “death is the central figure in all three episodes”, says Cristina Pezzoli, the director of Modena’s new Trittico. “Puccini is telling us stories about a world on the point of collapse, on the point of being annihilated for ever. The history of these years bears witness to the tragic consequences of this fundamental decadence.” The female lead in all three operas is the splendid Amarilli Nizza, whose voice and acting are very convincing. Together with Alberto Mastromarino, a thrilling baritone, two of the most fascinating and sought-after Italian artists could have been won for this production. The version impeccably displays the three pieces in the order intended by Puccini. Recorded live at the Teatro Comunale di Modena 2007, this Trittico is fresh, insightful and entertaining. It is modern and stylized, serious and lugubrious in the first two operas and very entertaining in the last. Nevertheless it is full of psychological atmosphere and marvellous music, performed by the Orchestra della Fondazione Arturo Toscanini and the Coro Lirico Amadeus - led by Julian Reynolds.
