Oslo, Norway-based indie-pop artist Tuvaband is a critically-acclaimed artist with an impressive international profile. Tuvaband is the wildly eclectic brainchild of fearless songwriter, multi-instrumentalist and producer Tuva Hellum Marschhauser. Tuva previously earned a Norwegian Grammy nomination and her song “Irreversible” was remixed by beloved dub icon Lee ‘Scratch’ Perry. Tuva’s intrepid artistry has garnered favourable comparisons to: Julia Holter, Kate Bush, Chelsea Wolfe, Cocteau Twins, A.A. Williams, Bjork, Jenny Hval, David Lynch, Jessica Sligter, Zola Jesus, Dead Can Dance, Karin Park, Lana Del Rey and CocoRosie. Her songwriting exudes an indie-pop mystique, easing through delicate piano-led folk, softly-soaring ghostly soul-pop and magical post-rock. Floating over these carefully-composed songs and densely textured soundscapes are Tuva’s fluttery vocals which manage to be both visceral and vulnerable. Tuvaband’s fourth album, “New Orders”, is a bold exploration of the many facets of her creativity. It marks the first time she did everything on an album, including playing all the instruments (except trombone and drums, though she programmed these beforehand and additionally kept parts of it), recording, producing and mixing. It’s a pure transmission of Tuva’s full-bloom artistry. Tuva: “I had a very clear vision for my new album, and that was to feel totally free and put no limitations on my songwriting and my production. If I had a lack of competence in a certain aspect, I would work tirelessly on it to achieve my artistic vision. Everything I learned from my previous albums I brought to this one. In the past, I felt scared of sounding too cheesy or cute with my songs, but for this album I took away all boundaries, limitations and genres”. Sonically, “New Orders” is Tuvaband’s most adventurous and layered album. Careful listens reveal a panoramic instrumental palette, brimming with synths, guitar, bass, programmed flutes, harp and horns. “On this album I wanted to test out more instruments”, Tuva shares. “I’ve arranged bass parts for others to play in the past, but this time I played on a real bass guitar myself - it was so much fun! I also programmed instruments, and played synths and guitar. In the end, I played and experimented so much. I never imagined I would be able to make an album like this two years ago.”
